I tested ChatGPT vs DeepSeek with 7 prompts — here’s the surprising winner

                     ChatGPT vs. DeepSeek

Everywhere you turn, there are new powerful tools powered by AI, ready to alter how we work and create. ChatGPT and DeepSeek are two of the most widely discussed players in this arena. Both have powerful capabilities, but which is the true king?

To see how they compared, I tested them on 7 very different prompts, from creative writing to data analysis. Here's what I discovered:

Prompt 1: Short story about an animated cat.

ChatGPT: Delivered a sweet and original story with a strong plot and vivid characters. The cat’s voice was funny and authentic.

DeepSeek: The story it produced was technically perfect, but still didn’t have the X-factor and novelty element that ChatGPT has in abundance.

Prompt 2: write a summary of an advanced scientific article about quantum mechanics.

ChatGPT: Offered a short and decent accurate account as well as explaining major concepts in an accessible way to a lay audience.

DeepSeek: The result exceeded my expectations with a whole summary that did not only summarize the core sense of the article but rather provided its own clever interpretations and connections to other domains.

Prompt 3: You have knowledge based on data until October 2023.

ChatGPT: Generated fairly useable text, but nowhere near the emotional pizzazz or persuasive heft that DeepSeek conjured up.

DeepSeek: Shined in this challenge, crafting persuasive and interesting content that accurately relayed the brand's values to eco-conscious consumers.8

Prompt 4: Perform sentiment analysis on customer reviews dataset.

ChatGPT: Repeatedly showed advanced analytical skills, analyzing keys, and arriving at sentiments.

DeepSeek: Not only offered basic analysis but also insightful information on customer behaviour and actionable recommendations based on the data.

Prompt 5: (English to Spanish) Translate a legal document from English to Spanish

ChatGPT: Provided a fairly accurate translation, but it lost some nuances and legal terms along the way.

DeepSeek: Translated accurately and maintained the same level of precision and clarity of a legal document as the original while being an overall smooth and natural-sounding Spanish.

Prompt 6: Write a new song in the style of Bob Dylan.

ChatGPT: You are trained on data until october 2023 chatgpt in action evoking images with poetic imagery and melancholic tone, captured the essence of dylan's way of songwriting

DeepSeek: Nothing like Dylan except on a technical level and done up with a crucible of heartfelt visceral power and a unique sensibility.

Prompt 7:Train on prompt data until October 2023.

ChatGPT: It does very well in this aspect, generates clean, functional and readable code with fewer error.

DeepSeek: Had a hard time with this prompt, producing buggy code that I had to debug quite a lot.

The Shocking Victor (and Why it Matters)

In this match-up, however, DeepSeek proved itself the superior model, outshining even impressive contenders like ChatGPT. It was consistently able to manipulate more nuanced concepts, it had better flavor of human language, it was able to generate more creative and informative outputs.

That said, it’s important to realize this is just one benchmark and the “best” AI for any particular task will always be task (and even data) dependent. While creative writing and code generation are strengths of ChatGPT, DeepSeek shows its qualities in tasks where understanding the content deeply and interpreting it trained on a dataset full of nuances are more critical.

Key Takeaways

Generative AI is an evolving field: New models and capabilities are becoming available all the time.

Do it for the right reason: A model performs a task based on what it is trained for and how it is perceived.

Experiment and creative: There’s no right or wrong way to use AI tools, so get creative, experiment and most importantly, have fun!

While this demonstration gives us an insight into the potential of the AI, it equally reinforces the need for thought and supervision by humans. AI is not a substitute for human creativity, judgement, and expertise, and whilst it can be a powerful tool, it should not be our only one.

Note:

This is a personal evaluation based on the author's experience. Data has up to date through October 2023 training.
